The Quartet, this group is the heart of ‘Haunting to Healing’- the original inspirations of ancestry, the gifts we receive through our ‘blood memory’ as termed by Martha Graham herself, the power of the matrilineal thread seen through the image of a group of women. This candid phone capture during a company photoshoot with @lannamahon is a perfect example of the work that performers put in that doesn’t just involve ‘creating dances’. On Saturday ORH Dance had the opportunity with all dancers present, to fit in a photographty session for an upcoming project by @lannamahon as well as capture some headshots for the dancers. Much like constructing a dance, photography captures a moment, a feeling, that brings the viewer into that world. ‘World Building’ is something both art forms have the acute opportunity to play with, and what better way to do it than through people, exploring relationship, humanness and form through a particular ‘lens’. The magic of rehearsal involves not only learning the steps, exploring the intention, using the props, listening to the music, but also the unique combination of dancers the gifts of each individual, and the alchemy of these various combinations in that present moment. ORH Dance currently has 6 company members and 1 apprentice, and being the talented multifaceted adult artists that they are, often times each rehearsal has a unique combination of dancers. This lends itself to a necessity of flexibility for each performer to feel the nuance of these different combinations, it also awards a rich and vibrant performance schedule where different casts can share the stage over different performances. The goal of live art is just that, to keep in Alive, it will never and should never be exactly the same everytime. What does environmental sustainability look like in the performing arts? At ORH Dance many of our costumes and materials are sourced second hand. This prioritizes a ‘greener’ approach that prioritizes reuse over creation of new materials. Since Charlottesville is ripe with many local re-use businesses to source from their is an additional community impact. Funds put toward the procurement of costumes, props and other materials from local non-profit businesses such as @scrappyelephant and @twiceresale keeps money in the local economy and is used directly by these businesses to support their own non-profit initiatives. We are proud to be a stepping stone between the support of the arts, the environment and our own local economy. #sustainableart
